How we helped an Australian startup by creating Animated Explainer Video

It was a Friday early morning when I got a message from some James Smith from Australia asking if I could help him with animated explainer video for an app. We at Contenteams created a lot of videos for mobile and web apps in different styles. So it was important for us to understand his objective of creating this video, target audience and other business detail before suggesting him a style.

A video call was scheduled and James explained that he is creating an app for supplier management in Australian market and his target audience is restaurant
or café owners and managers. We discussed other detail and finally decided that we will go for an animated explainer video with 2D characters and motion graphics. We also decided to follow a storyline and create a buyer persona to evolve the story.

In Contenteams, we always try to understand clients’ business ethos and try to create visuals according to his business environment. We started researching about a typical restaurant scenario in Australia. We studied work environment of a manager or owner of a restaurant and their way of dealing with suppliers.  We also needed to study suppliers’ practices there.

We started with creating a buyer’s persona. We kept in mind James’s audience and designed the character. James liked it. Then we started creating other elements like restaurant outside and inside scenes, other characters. We have created motion graphic elements as well to support scenes.

Then we faced a problem. James’s app was still in early development phase and all app screen designs were not complete. We needed some screenshots from the app which we were supposed to animate to explain certain functionality of the app. Our designer had some experience of App UI so we designed screens that we needed, based on the wireframes created by James’s app developer. We sent our screen designs to James and asked him to discuss with his app developer. They accepted our designs and returned with a few minor modifications. James was happy as now he was assured that his app video and actual app would have same designs.

We created the storyboard with illustrations and shared with James. We created final illustration sets after we modified few things according his feedback. We were ready for animation. Animators created the video as per storyline and we added TTS voice to create 1st draft of the video. James was very happy with the 1st draft. He needed a few minor changes in animated text that were in display in the video. We have done all changes.

We needed a voiceover. So we send a few sample voices from our known voice artists from Australia. James picked one and we sent narration file sent to the selected artist. We also sent three royalty free music to James to choose from. Once we got the voiceover file and music, we placed them with visuals. Now we had the job of synching the whole thing. After all these team efforts the animated explainer video was finally ready to fly. We tested the video with some dummy audience to make sure the message is being conveyed by the video.  We delivered final version to James.
Not to mention his initial happiness, James’ came back after one month with wonderful result he achieved with the animated explainer video. He got more than expected sign ups for his app.
